Tom Cruise plays Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a cocky young United States Navy F-14 Tomcat pilot
with VF-1 Wolfpack flying off USS Enterprise. Maverick is the son of Duke Mitchell, a fighter
pilot shot down during the Vietnam War and listed as missing in action with no details, a
mystery which haunts Maverick. While attending the Navy's elite air combat training academy,
affectionately known as "Top Gun," Maverick romances the civilian astrophysics instructor
(Kelly McGillis) and competes with crackerjack pilot Ice (Val Kilmer) for top honors. He is
the quintessential rebel, upsetting senior officers with his antics and risk-taking while
simultaneously amazing them with his skill. The pilots there are very competitive, especially
Tom "Iceman" Kazanski (Kilmer), who thinks Maverick is an overly reckless flier. The CO of
Top Gun is Mike "Viper" Metcalfe (Skerritt), an extremely talented and decorated pilot who
flew with Maverick's MIA father in Vietnam. Maverick starts out at Top Gun feeling practically
invincible, but then a terrible accident leaves him shocked, depressed and questioning whether
he still wants to fly. In the end, Maverick overcomes a tragic loss and his need to stand out
in the crowd and proves that he can shine as part of a team.
